Actually the bottom 95% of taxpayers paid only 41.3% of income taxes in 2008. The middle class does not pay most taxes. 58.3% of all income taxes were paid by the top 5% of taxpayers. That represented tax filers reporting incomes of $159,619 and above.

The middle class as represented by those in the under 5% to 50% paid 38.6% of income t ax paid for 2008.
