Gold won't do well in a world-wide collapse. It will do well in a single country collapse, if you need a way of transporting wealth. It will do well in a world-wide "muddle along" scenario, depression or hyperinflation. All those seem more likely to me. If we're in a mess like in the book "The Road" gold won't help at all (though guns and ammo will as well as survival food/water). Gold works best if the currency collapses and everything else is left standing.
