I dont think there is anything wrong with free trade, the problem is that our fiat money eliminated the natural breaking action on a trade imbalance, ie, if money was gold, the trade deficit would stop when our gold was spent. But the fiat money allowed spent dollars to be recycled back to the US economy in terms of debt, so the trade imbalance kept growing for decades, gutting our US manufacturing in the process.
