A lot of those "bargain" plans are total ripoffs. I have used T-Mobile pay as you go plan for the last 4-5 years. $0.10 a minute and never had any issues. You pick any compatible phone you want. Bought the phone for ~$100 at the time and batteries still last 10-14 days (mostly standby).
