I imagine many swing voters not tied to ideology voted for him the second time only because their homes were going up in value and jobs were plentiful.

So they voted for Obama thinking their homes would start rising again and jobs would be created. Disappointed yet again... This stuff takes time, people are not patient, as Bush 41 and even the Dems in the 1994 midterms saw.
