>>> " The ADB's rationale is that the capital deepening of the Chinese economy has passed its most productive point, and that the country's reserve of working-age labor will grow only slowly in the years ahead because of low birth rates after 1980. " <<<

I expect this may be true for the coastal regions, but I would expect capital can be well employed in the interior.

The companies of the interior may need to adjust the relative efforts in export and domestic markets, since export growth is getting push back from the rest of the world and the coastal companies are already established in many markets.

******

One other point is that corruption does not directly
imply mal-investment, but it can make business more expensive, and cut ROI.

"hence the descent into chaos is likely to occur more quickly. As for the country's fate if and when the current resource bubble bursts, it does not bear thinking about."

I just love it this analysis. They are desperate!

BRICs took QE1 easily but are saying: we cannot take QE2. It is too much!!!

player m: > Doesn't this just make a stronger case for gold? Countries are bending over backwards to make sure that their currency doesn't appreciate by either taxes, intervention, or legislation. It appears that the only currency that isn't really concerned about how cheap or expensive it is.....is gold.

player tj: Did my street-people experience today. Am resting at lobby of Conrad, in between meetings. Had a quick meal at big mac. Going from meeting to meeting. Also checked out preview of electronic's trade fair. Mostly may be a waste of time but who can know. Have iPad, iPhone, Blackberry and a steel-lined black-anodized aluminum "Cracemug by Pencock" full of green tea in hip bag slung on shoulder.

I note that as hangouts go, hotel public areas are better than other public areas. I also note that life is not easy without i-this-i-that-n-blackberry-the-other.

Also, many office girls go around in mini skirts.

Gold? At the mo I need gold to drop, which means, player m, you stand a good chance being rewarded for you faith.

player m: HK is booming. Newest Tatler gossip magazine is out and it is 512 pages thick. Most likely 400+ pages are advertisements.

FCC Ball with Creedence Clearwater Revival raised a record amount this year for scholarships to kids who would not otherwise be able to attend university. Quite a change from last year, when auction items went cheap.

Beatles White Album signed by all 4 Beatles sold for HK$300,000 - or almost US$40,000. I think a Jimi Hendrix signed album went for HK$200,000 - just over US$25,000

Don't know if that is expensive or cheap.

Interesting stats.....my wife is a Nine West and Ralph Lauren shopper thank goodness.....

washingtonpost.com

SNIP:

-- Eighty-six percent of all prestige or luxury makes of motor vehicles are driven by people who are not millionaires.

-- Typically, millionaires pay about $16 (including tip) for a haircut.

-- Nearly four in 10 millionaires buy wine that costs about $10.

-- In the United States, there are nearly three times as many millionaires living in homes with a market value of less than $300,000 than there are living in homes valued at $1 million or more.

-- Forget the Manolo Blahnik high-priced shoes. The No. 1 shoe brand worn by millionaire women is Nine West. Their favorite clothing store is Ann Taylor.

player c: I have gotten to know one of the wealthiest persons in HK. Altho some family members have bodyguards and do buy branded stuff here and there, they are more likely to have cafe de coral [edit: local fastfood] food boxes around, and the whole family has a practice of penny wise...

player tj: frankly we cannot afford and do not want to be 'rich'

just peace of mind is all

besides, we like 2nd-hand mini cooper
prefer chop-chop haircut in 2nd level shop in alleyway of central, where the cost happens to be hkd 100

only have need for one pair of timberland shoes
and one pair of rockport same
hiking sandles and running shoes completes the shoe collection

acquire clothing once every 3 years, in bulk, at timberlands
all ties are gifts, i believe all are from days when i dated, meaning before 1996 marriage to wife, and admittedly a bit out of fashion

all suits were made in 1999 when i needed to fill newly renovated apartment closet with some suits
most of the then fitted shirts are still in there original packaging

am afraid to open the packages - shirts may fall apart
keep changing mothballs for the suits - condition also uncertain [make note to check]

do not typically buy wine except as dinner contribution, so tend to be generous to hosts,
until i found italian wine merchant - fab wine discovered by experts sourced at low cost and sold direct at low price

like to swap computers once every 3-4 years - they are tools
swap phone once every 3 years - they are tools

hobby - reading, kids, and occasional holidays

biggest single expense category annually is getgold :0)

wife shops, but once every 2 years at most - she is too busy doing whatever

peace of mind is nice

amen

player m: I thought your biggest expense were holidays arranged by your wife!

Spend lots of money on 2-3 holidays per year - but longest one is rent-free as we stay at parents house.

(my CNY ski trip will be single largest expenditure outside of school fees and home rent).

Bought car second hand for $10,000, is now 9 years old and still "like new" with only 18,000 miles.

Shop twice a year at Brooks Brothers for shirts, once a year at both JC Penny and Gap for underwear, socks & pants. Total outlay about $500 per year.

Wife very economical on shopping front and eat at home 5-6 nights per week to avoid getting gouged by local restaurants.
Splurge on wine though. $20 per night budget at home (rather than $10), double to triple that when guests are involved.

player tj: both of us are guilty, but actually in moderation, and almost if not all paid for by "cloud atm" extractions via naked short of puts and covered calls - iow, selling insurance

people unjustly believe warren buffett is a great investor, and he isn't, badly lagging gold

what warren is great [at was] acquired a good insurance company to generate the perpetual flow of cash with which he use to buy shares with, and kept buying

we do not have a insurance company, and so must make do with options :0)
