I think the idea was to let Japan spend all the research money and make all the mistakes, and then swoop in with something good and take over the market.

Alas, Japan didn't make many mistakes, and the best GM can do is to ALMOST match the mileage and performance of a Honda Civic... for 3 times the price and the Volt probably won't last even half as long.

I agree with other poster. The government should not have interfered when GM was in trouble. Then again, the economy would likely have been in even worse shape now if they hadn't.
