Y'know, this is a sad case. Do you know the book "Flowers For Algernon" by Daniel Keys? It was made into a movie that starred Cliff Robertson called "Charlie". About a guy with very low intelligence who gets a treatment that turns him into a mental giant. Only it's temporary, and he starts to notice the decline. He's still very, very smart, and he can see it slipping away. Then he's ordinary. Then he only remembers bits and snatches, words without coherent context. Then he's right back to where he started.

I'm not suggesting that Charters is a moron. Far from it. But he's like a fighter out on his feet, swinging from memory, only dangerous if you close your eyes and stick your head in front of his punches. Flowers for the old guy, and keep him from hurting babies and scaring the children. In Henry IV, Part I, Owen Glendower, the Welsh wizard-warrior says, "I can call spirits from the vasty deep!" And Hotspur replies something like, "Ay, and so can I, and so can any man. But will they come when you do call?" His wizardry is over, and he has only a pathetic, ancient wand and a book of ineffective spells.
