Press release from Sun today. Anybody think there are lines to read between here? ************************************* Sun Expands Commitment to Telecom Market Hires 17-Year Northern Telecom Executive to Lead Network Software Group MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1997--Sun Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW - news) continued its commitment to the rapidly growing telecommunications market with the appointment of 17-year Northern Telecom executive John Stewart McFarlane as vice president and general manager of Sun's Network Software Group. ''Telecommunications is very big business for Sun, and the expertise we've established in this field is quickly being tapped by companies around the world that need highly-reliable, scalable and safe networks to provide their organization with a WebTone for exchanging information internally and doing business economically with partners, suppliers and customers,'' said Janpieter Scheerder, president of SunSoft. ''John's first-hand experience with one of the world's leading telecommunications companies is exactly what our team needs at its helm to maintain and grow Sun's market leadership.'' The telecommunications market which grew 11 percent to generate more than $298 billion in revenues in 1996 is expected to produce double-digit growth through the millennium across the entire spectrum of products and services, according to a recent study by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and the MultiMedia Telecommunications Association (MMTA). Telecommunications investment during the 1995-2000 period is expected to total $365 billion, the study reports, and the data communications market is projected to expand to more than $127 billion in 2000 from $67 billion in 1995. ''While high growth in the telecommunications industry presents tremendous opportunity, it also causes numerous networking challenges as the number of users explodes and the networks become much larger and more complex,'' said McFarlane. ''The reason I've joined Sun is because it understands these issues and has the products in place to power and manage the highest quality, most reliable and scalable networks that telco and enterprise customers demand.'' McFarlane was formerly vice president of Northern Telecom's Broadband Networks Line of Business, responsible for research and development, as well as technology planning. Prior to this McFarlane held numerous positions in product management, marketing and engineering, which included 8 years in international assignments in Germany and the U.K. At Sun, McFarlane will manage and provide strategic direction for Sun's Network Software Group, formerly SunSoft's Solstice(TM) division. Targeted by Sun for high growth, Network Software Group products include: -- Telecommunications Network Management systems for large-scale, complex network management and administration. -- Enterprise Network and Systems Management products for simplified network and enterprise management in heterogeneous computing environments. -- Sun(TM) Internet Mail Server(TM) for scalable, flexible email with full IMAP4 implementation. -- Security and E-Commerce software for safely conducting business over corporate intranets and extranets, as well as the public Internet. -- Directory and naming Services including a full LDAP implementation. biz.yahoo.com
