The answer for me is land. As long as society remains somewhat civilized it is as good as gold in many respects plus it pays a small return while being used as farmland or timberland or even housing rental (but that last reduces the acreage you can afford). Pick your country if you are worried about the "remains somewhat civilized" part.

The income you can get from renting farmland is maybe 3% and by most accounts the return on timberland is generally even less and much more intermittent, but that small return is above and beyond the inflationary gains you will get if you ever sell the land...
