Haven't traveled much lately so cannot add much comment except to note that the high end is doing well. Your friend has not seen what the vast majority of American consumers are undergoing. It isn't pretty.

Visited my clothes guy Friday, and was shocked at the price increases. Had ordered some shirts sight unseen and was going to complain about the increased cost and lower quality. The outfit whose shirts I formerly favored previously made them all in the USA to very high standards. No longer. Fit is different and fabric not quite up to par for prices which are close to bespoke. I am now forced to go bespoke at slightly higher prices. I am not a bespoke snob, just have my standards. They are no longer being met even at highest end retail level. Fortunately, the shirts I previously bought are indeed well made and will last a very long time so transition to bespoke will be slow.

This is happening all over, in all areas. The quality of retail products is slowly becoming less.....had to complain to my wife that she was getting toilet paper which was not up to par. And toilet paper is important! What's the point of working hard if the experience of wiping your ass is unpleasant? She told me it was the same stuff she has always gotten. She's going to hunt for better stuff, but I am sure it will be more expensive.

I suppose gold is into its Fall correction, which is fine. But the Fed may well surprise on Nov. 3 might surprise so I am not selling. I am guessing that the huge QE2 many are expecting is not going to happen. Don't get me wrong, some sort of QE2 will take place but the details will probably surprise.
