always wondered why some politicians would spend millions trying to get elected to positions that paid 150k. Does that make sense?

Most of them are not spending their personal fortunes. When they do in Senate Campaigns it is generally in the form of a loan. This enables them to be paid indirectly by lobbyists and PACs without it being categorized as a bribe.

In the end the income stream from even one term is sufficient to repay a great investment in election. One has to engage in the obligatory speaking fees and other perks to receive a positive return.

There are a few who do seek office for egalitarian reasons. The smears engaged in by desperate politicians scared of having to earn an honest living is enough to scare off most self respecting individuals.
