<<What is it with Alaska? How do you come up with these people?>>

We are a very eclectic state and our politics range the whole spectrum. A small population allows for candidates many standard deviations from the mean.

And we are a very ironic state. We probably have the most sophisticated constitution of any state. The most intact social systems and one of the most progressive supreme courts.

And of course our huge government permanent fund with 40 to 50 billion in it we live off of, paying no state taxes at all.

And natives in Alaska have more absolute power than any minorities in the country.

Many people who come to Alaska are escaping the lower 48 where they cannot cope. If you go to the very small communites you will find some real crazy people. Like wheelers cove.

We also have a lot of very uneducated people who do not even understand the concept of education, like Palin.

But we also have pockets of highly educated people. The group I ran with in the 70's and 80's (ad hoc democrats) took control of the house for awhile and implemented massive social programs based on modern social science and human decency.

But the last 25 years we have been overwhelmed by the right wing. Fortunately there is little damage they can do as we set up progams not easily dismantled. LIke the two divisions I set up Emergency medical services and alcoholism and drug abuse.

And it takes a 3/4 vote in both houses to spend a dime out of the permanet funds principle. That is impossible. We had to give payola to the Republican's and oil companies to get the permanent fund, but we knew how important it was and those guys can always be bought. We also allow no permanent fund investments in Alaska so the crooks cannot get at the money.

We only have two liberal cities, Juneau and Anchorage. Fairbanks is right wing. The bush splits.
