There is the well-known Stockholm Syndrome and people are notoriously susceptible to patriotic xenophobic fervour, so there's a glimmer of truth in the idea, but Stockholm Syndrome is not for everyone. Some people are not easily hypnotized. Suggestibility is not their strong suit.
