POLITICS OF FEAR: MADDOW MAKES UP STORY ABOUT OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING TO SCARE VIEWERS ABOUT GOP

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow spent most of her show warning America of the dangerous extremists about to be elected to Congress. In her effort to evoke as much fear as possible in her audience, she claimed Rep. Steve Stockman, from the GOP class of 1994, was so closely tied to the militia movement that he "actually received advanced notice that the Oklahoma City bombing was going to happen."

This appears to be a fabrication. As documented in this article from the Chicago Tribune in April 1995, a militia group in Michigan had received a mysterious fax in advance of the bombing. After the horrific event occurred, they faxed the message to many congressmen, including Rep. Stockman. Here is Rep. Stockman's statement from April 1995, as well.

Don, > And now you have this right wing kook, wife of Clarence Thomas, calling Anita Hill after 19 years and leaving a voice mail telling Hill to apologize for her testimony...

What's wrong with that?

Anita Hill and her supporters gave birth to the mother of all smear campaign slogans, "It's not the nature of the evidence, but rather the seriousness of the charge."
