Soup,
Jobs predicted on the CNBC interview today that many would still buy locally, as they can get full technical support that way. This implies that support will be limited on stuff bought thru the apple store, perhaps just current telephone support terms. Wonder if the new store will point out the difference.

As a heavy user that would suit me just fine, but can see many folks still preferring to buy from a real person near home.

Notice the shipment terms on the store page? Two days if shipping from stock, but two weeks if non-stock. Not exactly JIT... .

>More worrisome from a personal point of view is the competition it poses to small resellers.

Yes, that is of considerable import!

What I would like to see Apple do to address this potential weakness in the marketing plan is to build into the Apple Store a "Knowledge Universe" (did I say that?) of links and information about the entire Apple reseller community. A virtual shopping mall chock full of retail presence covering every hardware and software offering that might pique the interest of the beleaguered Macophile.

And to encourage casual shopping, how about making QTVR rooms part of the store? There could even be a transporter in the corner with accessible controls to choose destinations. One could transport to the rim of the Grand Canyon or the bridge of the Enterprise! (either one) Shoppers could be represented as avatars and converse with one another. Oh yeah! This could be a great store!

And they might even have fun doing it...

Soup; I hope we do not see Apple selling from a swap meet soon.

Apple is responding to competition to Dell and CPQ, and clearly the small VARs have not been doing the job as a whole or else Apple would not be in this mess. Apple is taking responsiblity for its own denstiny. I see this as a long term strategic positive for Apple.

Soup,

Could you give me the url to the Apple Store, please?

Jobs said on CNBC that people will configure their new Macs at the site but will buy locally for the local support. I'm not sure that's true, but a lot of people don't buy online or shop online and I think the new distribution agreements are great.

I also think most of the selling yesterday was selling by the day-traders, who bought for the run-up before the news and sold just before the announcement or just after. The rest were shorters, selling at the news, also. I expect the stock to move steadily upward now, because the overall news was good and there's more in the hopper.
