Texas National Guard member killed by Mexican gunmen
Oct 21 05:30 PM US/Eastern

A member of the Texas National Guard was gunned down outside a house in Ciudad Juarez along with a Mexican with whom he was talking, the Chihuahua state Attorney General's Office said Thursday.
"The National Guard member who was murdered was identified as 21-year-old Jose Gil Hernandez Ramirez," the office said in its daily briefing, adding that the crime took place Wednesday.

An office spokesman said witnesses had reported that Hernandez and a Mexican were talking together outside a house when gunmen opened fire killing both.

More than 50 US citizens have been killed in the past two years of violence in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Ciudad Juarez has the highest murder rate in all of Mexico. More than 2,500 people so far this year have been killed in the city from gangland warfare between rival drug cartels.
