To clarify the last post, I'm considering going long the same number of shares... sorry for the extra post...

Ted, when I want to cover a short temporarily in a stock like AMZN where short shares are difficult to come by, I will box the position.

I box frequently, my broker seems to ignore the uptick rule when I sell longs from a boxed position. To do this, I just "buy" rather than "buy to cover" the shares. Remember that this is not considered a flat position as far as margin requirements are concerned, so it will eat into your buying power.

Hope this helps a little,

Barb

Ted,

Just bear in mind that this strategy 'works' when your basis cost for each position is the same price. So watch your new position carefully and have a plan, in advance, about when you will get out if things favor your original position. Or set a stop. It may happen quickly.

Regards,
Bond

I have boxed my shorts on occasions, like I have done for AOL now.
The main problem is unwinding that position profitably without increasing the risk significantly, specially when your sell and buy prices are close; anyone with a good strategy?
