American politics seems to rhyme somewhat with the Weimar Republic. Middle to lower class electorate split between religious social conservatives/tea partiers and liberals/minorities is similar to the Weimar Republic's nationalists/fascists versus socialists/communists. Interestingly the vast majority of German nationalist/fascists, who eventually became the Nazis, were, like their opponents, from lower middle class backgrounds, many thrown out of work by the great depression aggravated by the Versailles treaty.

Let's hope American centrists choose wisely.
