Off Topic Alan You asked? I'm answering. >What Brooklyn did you grow up in? Brooklyn, Maryland. < Actually, i have been to Brooklyn MD. Not a nice place but, they have great crabs! I'm 60 years old. I grew up in Flatbush and went to High School in Crown Heights. I spent most summer days in Brighton Beach. The gang (not in todays sense of the word) I hung out with was 80% Jewish, 10% Irish and 10% Italian. There were no Protestants. I don't think I even knew a Protestant. >The bagels were better,< Better? I'll give you "authentic". I remember watching them cook the bagels thru the store front window. They lined them up in single rows on long narrow slat like boards for the oven. > the pizza was indescribably better(the cheese dripping on your hand and the oil burning the roof of your mouth).< Great description! I have the exact same memories. And I have (after much research) found a few pizzarias here in San Diego that can duplicate the old NY pizza. But a few years ago, I went to Italy and discovered that more is not better. Their pizza is very light and exquisite in its simplicity. > But please don't forget the corned beef, the rye bread, the potato salad, the chocolate malteds,< Now you got me. I give up; you win. > and best of all, the potato knishes.< I used to get mine in Coney Island, a block down from Nathans. I think it was caled Mother Kiska's Knishes. She had several stuffings including kiska. I would like to add egg creams, mello rolls, halavah, charlotte russe, hot dogs from the umbrella stand, lox, and roasted chestnuts. >As a matter of fact, everything that was sold at the corner deli, bakery and pizza parlor was better and it didn't matter what corner you were on. Every corner had one of these not to be forgotten eateries. Our children will never experience such joy. Manhattan Bagel knows this. You don't see them calling themselves Brooklyn Bagel!< Don't forget the candy store and ice cream parlor. Regards - Jim
