It is why commodities prices are soaring and the stocks of companies associated with them. I was pointing out as far back as the mid 90's that Chicago and New York markets were too tied to happenings with the U.S. economy and not seeing the global picture. One could best see it in copper and steel markets, up one evening, and driven down with the opening in NY based on US news headlines, even though demand was being drive by events off our shores.

It happens still, but the consciousness has been changing slowly since the start of the Financial Crisis.
