I think your reading is right on target about the death of retailers. Maybe Steve sees them like the clone makers, cutting away from revenue. But this still does not increase client base.

Yesterday hurt. Hurt really, really bad. I am looking at getting the G3 powerbook, but I have dropped out of the aapl race for the time being. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me THRICE-lose the farm.

All the more reason for the small retailer to establish presence on the web. Apple, as a web theme, would work great to that end.
