The California High-Speed Rail project is a planned future high-speed rail system in the state of California and headed by the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA). The project was approved by Californian voters on November 4, 2008, with the passage of Proposition 1A authorizing the issuance of US$9.95 billion in general obligation bonds for the project. The CHSRA is currently tasked with completing final planning, design, and environmental efforts. When built, high-speed trains capable of 220 mph (350 km/h) are anticipated to link San Francisco and Los Angeles in two and a half hours. The planned system would also serve other major California cities, such as Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, Bakersfield, Anaheim, Irvine, Riverside, and San Diego.

Given security considerations, somebody living in SF or on the Peninsula has to leave for SFO 2 hours before the flight.

Stimulus money will spur construction on California high-speed rail project, officials say
The $2.25 billion will pay to finish engineering and environmental reviews and provide seed money to start building the Anaheim-to-San Francisco route. Others say major hurdles remain for the project.
January 29, 2010|By Dan Weikel
The $2.25 billion in federal stimulus funds awarded this week to the California high-speed rail project ensures that construction can proceed on a 520-mile route between Anaheim and San Francisco within three years, rail officials said Thursday.

Mehdi Morshed, executive director of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, said the infusion of federal dollars would pay for completion of the project's engineering and environmental reviews and provide a significant amount of seed money to start building the system by September 2012, as required by the federal grant.
