Right now the table-pounders still want to believe that whether we're #1 is just a psychological choice we make, and not believing their mantra is a character flaw. But economic and political reality is creeping up and past them; it's a multilateral world out there in all respects except the ability to overrun and occupy other nations, which is still our unique preserve unless the other guy also has nukes or is just too big to swallow. After 9/11, an African member of the UN Security Council was asked if they dared to vote against the US on future resolutions. Their ambassador's response was, "What, are they going to invade us too if we don't?" Not much to base an empire on in the long run. You are exactly right that the UK may be our role model, as I noted just yesterday, I think.
