MicroProse Unleashes a Whole New Dimension for Fans of the Award-Winning Sid Meier's Civilization II Series

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The rulers of the most powerful civilizations in the universe now have more power in the palm of their hands with the release of Civ II(TM) Fantastic Worlds(TM), the newest title in the Civ II franchise, from MicroProse, Inc. (Nasdaq: MPRS). Where past Civ II games focused on historical occurrences, Civ II Fantastic Worlds enables strategy enthusiasts and gamers alike the chance to explore 19 new, incredible science fiction and fantasy scenarios where anything can happen
-- and does. In mind-boggling, alternate worlds, players can meet up with everything from dinosaurs to aliens, as well as create their own worlds using the scenario construction kit.

To date, the Civilization franchise has generated sales of more than two million units worldwide and has been inducted into the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame. Nearly a year after its initial release, Civilization II remains one of the top 20 best-selling games in the United States, boasting sales of over 20,000 units a month. Hailed as the "Game of the Year" in 1996 by PC Gamer and Computer Retail Week, and "Strategy Game of the Year" by Computer Gaming World and Time Magazine, Sid Meier's Civilization II also ranks as one of the most critically-acclaimed games in strategic history, receiving five star ratings in Next Generation and Computer Games Strategy Plus.

Civ II Fantastic Worlds features complex new scenarios focusing on previously uncharted worlds, such as "Mars," "Age of Reptiles" and "Atlantis." Scenarios will include new units, city improvements and will present new terrain, advances and wonders. Packed with dragons, goblins and treasures, these worlds provide endless possibilities and challenges.

The gameplay is enhanced by Civ II Fantastic World's advanced scenario construction kit. In response to the overwhelming demand from Civ II gamers, Civ II Fantastic Worlds offers an unprecedented set of 10 editing tools and a vast graphics library. In customizing their scenarios, players can choose from the Civ II Fantastic Worlds library, from other scenarios, or produce and develop their own units, cities, terrains and more.

With these elements, strategy enthusiasts will be able to more effectively and creatively design the world of their dreams, improve the quality of life in their world, trigger events, and determine the path of their civilization -- adding more excitement to this ultimate gaming experience.

Game Concept

As with the other games in the Civilization franchise, Civ II Fantastic Worlds allows players to rule their own empires, controlling every decision necessary to build the most powerful civilization on the planet. Players can build societies based on the principles of democracy or rule with an iron fist; they can bring glory and power to their civilization by building incredible "Wonders of the World" or put their people to work to develop the principles of law, science and technology.

New Scenarios Include:

* New World -- An alternate universe where the European influence never made it to the Americas. Play as a Native American tribe against other Native American tribes.

* Samurai -- A parallel universe that allows the player to find out what would happen if Japan had never received Western intervention.

* Atlantis -- Play as an Atlantean on the fabled continent of Atlantis.

* Midgard -- Players can enter a world of dragons and goblins in search of treasures.

* Mars -- A true sci-fi fact adventure offers players the chance to colonize the Red Planet.

* Age of Reptiles -- Explore the possibilities of life with dinosaurs by picking a Dino Tribe and playing against opposing Dinosaurs.

* X-COM(R) -- Based on the game, play as X-COM soldiers against the alien menace on the moon of Phobos.

* Jules Verne -- An alternate world where Jules Verne's designs become a reality and where exploration unlocks the secrets of the universe.

* Ice Planet -- Play as one of three races on an alien world. Choose a side and fight for survival.
