There was substantial government intervention in the gold markets, especially in the 1990s, a lot of it below radar.

The Brits had a huge sale - half of their gold reserves - in 1999. An enormous blunder.

Governments, especially in emerging market countries, are now accumulating gold. I think the government 'peg' is no longer a problem.
