Big Sur is south of Monterey/Carmel (SC is on the north end of Monterey Bay). Monterey was once the capital of Calif. Back when those guys in Philly were writing the Declaration. "In 1776, Spain named Monterey the capital of Baja (lower) and Alta (upper) California. This same year, Captain Juan Bautista de Anza arrived with the first settlers". I give you this factoid cuz my father was stationed in Camp Anza (Riverside) when I was born. But, I digress. en.wikipedia.org (Mendocino coastline is strikingly similar)
