For Obama there is. He doesn't have to worry about showing the Dalai Lama out the back door past sacks of garbage. Also, there is the considerable side benefit of spending more time on Air Force One where nobody bothers him.

is there that great a benefit for a President to travel outside the country?

According to Stratfor, there is a strong political advantage for "O" to focus his attention outside of the country.

Haps.

"Obama comes out of this election severely weakened domestically. If he continues his trajectory, the rest of the world will perceive him as a crippled president, something he needn't be in foreign policy matters. Obama can no longer control Congress, but he still controls foreign policy. He could emerge from this defeat as a powerful foreign policy president, acting decisively in Afghanistan and beyond. It's not a question of what he should do, but whether he will choose to act in a significant way at all."

<Really, in this day and age is there that great a benefit for a President to travel outside the country?>

I am happy to see him out of the country or playing golf.

The Foreign Leaders get wedgies if they can't do a "Grip and Grin" with him.
