DANBURY, Conn., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Trex Medical Corporation
(Amex: TXM) announced today that it has entered into a five-year, exclusive
worldwide agreement with IMiG-MRI Systems, LLC, a subsidiary of Intermagnetics
General Corporation, to distribute that company's new MRI (magnetic resonance
imaging) system. Under the terms of the agreement, the system will be
marketed as the TREX-MRI and will be distributed by Trex Medical's direct
sales force as well as select dealers throughout the U.S. and overseas.
Earlier this year, IMiG-MRI received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration to market this product - a winner of R&D Magazine's
1996 R&D 100 Award. Trex Medical will exhibit the TREX-MRI at the annual
meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in early December.
Intermagnetics (Amex: IMG) is a world leader in the development and
application of superconductivity technology. The Latham, New York-based
company manufactures superconducting magnets, wire, and cable, as well as
associated low-temperature refrigeration equipment and radio frequency coils,
the combination of which is essential for MRI. Intermagnetics manufactures
magnets and other key components for some of the world's leading MRI
manufacturers.
"This agreement is an opportunity for Trex Medical to become involved in
MRI with a unit that offers advanced technology and high-quality imaging at a
very low cost," said Hal Kirshner, president and chief executive officer of
Trex Medical. "In addition to entering a multibillion-dollar market and
expanding our product line, we can now explore the benefits of this technology
as an adjunct to mammography and for use in MRI-guided breast biopsy."
"We are pleased to have our clinical MRI product distributed by one of the
fastest-growing medical-imaging manufacturers, with a demonstrably successful
and aggressive sales and marketing philosophy," said Glenn H. Epstein,
president and chief operating officer of Intermagnetics. "We further believe
that the reputation and name recognition of Trex Medical and the Thermo
Electron family of companies will strongly support its market distribution."
Trex Medical Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer of
mammography equipment and minimally invasive digital breast-biopsy systems. In
addition, the company manufactures general-purpose X-ray systems and state-of-
the-art imaging systems used during vascular and interventional cardiac
procedures such as balloon angioplasty. Trex Medical is a public subsidiary
of ThermoTrex Corporation, a Thermo Electron company (NYSE: TMO). More
