BOTH areas where federal control and authority has supplanted what was PREVIOUSLY considered to be entirely within the States' purview.

BOTH (and many others) deriving from the Supreme Court's *expansion* of it's interpretation of what the US Constitution's 'commerce clause' is supposed to mean.

The federal bureaucratic edifice of drug prohibition (as exampled by the marijuana prohibition I mentioned) AND the bureaucratic edifice and mandates (including the mandate to purchase insurance, also already mentioned) erected in the health care act.

And, many, many, *other* extensions of federal power in recent decades....

ALL deriving their legal authority from the court's expanded view that the 'commerce clause' covers almost EVERYTHING. (Even things that never cross a state line and never enter commerce!)
