What you are missing is the fact that we do not have many oil resources. The Middle East does. Which is why we are fighting a series of wars there and being attacked by terrorists from there. It is hard to quantify dead and wounded military and civilians, but if we could, my guess is that alternatives don't come off as being all that expensive. Then, if you add in the environmental damage and the fact that our fresh water supplies are dying due to oil and gas leakage into the ground, then oil looks mighty pricey.
