Competing Architectures for Next-Generation LANs: VLANs,
IP and Multilayer Switching

The LANs of old were based upon Ethernet, Token-Ring and FDDI
technologies. The user's criteria for selecting a LAN technology were
simple -- cost and performance. Times have changed, and the networking
components that make up a LAN and a network of LANs have evolved into
a higher level of sophistication. Software feature functionality and
architecture diversity now permeate the marketplace. The selection of
technology is no longer simple but requires knowledge of present and
future application use, security, scalability and management requirements.
This session will focus on the capabilities and demands of each new LAN
architectural alternative and its impact on current installations.
