Good afternoon Greg!
And thank you for the compliments!!
Regarding my aversion to revealed arguments -
I believe that every religious text and context is a purely human construct. As a result, I reject any effort to explain the perceived world by referring to a creation story (or other religiously-sourced principle) as circular. I am neither equipped nor inclined to argue whether or not there is a divine principle sharing our universe. However, for myself I believe that at the bottom of every religion we find entirely human conceits ... not to put too fine a point on it, make-believe. As Fred can tell you, I respect those who are religious. You won't find me teasing the defenders of creation. Nonetheless, it is not for me.
Am I confining myself to a box by selscting a materialist outlook? Perhaps. But to my way of seeing things I am a microbe in an enormous box, one who delights in staring upon the vastness of the galaxy on moonless nights. As somewhat of an agoraphobe, I am somewhere between contented and a mite freaked (froken?) out to explore just my corner of one continent of this planet nicely concealed in the endless stradrifts of this portion of one arm of our galaxy. And when I put my eye to the ocular and discern the smudge of an island universe many megaparsecs away, almost timeless photons drizzling directly onto my own retina ... I feel unalloyed wonder.

Hello Greg ...
...about art.
I too dabble in artistic endeavors.
You could probably speak just as eloquently about the materials, construction and other technical features of my pieces. I would not expect you to unless you felt an urge to try your hand at something similar. (I would regard that sort of interest as a most sincere compliment btw.)
I would certainly not expect you to ask me why I made that piece, unless you were intrigued by a detail: "why that shape there?" or equivalent.
No, as a fellow artist "how" and "why" seem to me to be diminishing questions, ones that seek to reduce art to text or craft. I would suggest that that misses the point of almost all art, whether it be in a world-class museum or magneted to the family fridge. While my reasoning side is very important to me, it is by no means my totality. I seek out art to view ... and I create art of my own ... to express those facets of my humanity that reason does not contain. There never was a science of beauty, and I am glad of that.

cheers js
