Yes, it's hard to get rich working for low pay: <Let's see how China will be doing when it approaches middle income levels.> It's a metaphysical impossibility.

They have yet to learn that crushing people into submission and emphasizing that the individual doesn't matter and is just a cloned particle of the state is not the way to engender innovative creativity, energy and perspicacity. Self-protection is the dominant psychology in such serfdoms.

Seeing the attitude of ripping people off as a means to "earn" a living I don't think they'll do very well very soon. It's the culture. They don't have a monopoly on that attitude which can be found anywhere, and perhaps as wealth grows an attitude of mutually beneficial identity formation will replace the grasping fraud for zero-sum survival.

so far so good, 30 years on

people have been making the obvious mistake to compare/equate china to ... [pick your choice]

- korea, taiwan, asean
- japan
- brazil
- india
- eastern europe
- russia

and failed to consider at least one other possibility

the mistaken premise is what makes the journey to teotwawki so entertaining.
