He simply argues that we can't afford to start there now when the economy needs widespread consumer demand to get restarted. He's said that repeatedly.

I agree with you here - thus the atypical argument from Krugman that reducing the tax rates now is a bad idea because of defict concerns.

That suggestion jumped out at me, too. Considering the rising obesity and diabetic rates in this country, it may very well be that people won't be living as long and as healthily as forecast.
