Look here for a little history of recording heads and an introduction to MR: quantum.com Look here for other information about HDD technology : quantum.com If you were to actually look at the numbers provided in the IBM and JTS press releases, you would see that IBM has achieved about 3.35 Gigs per disk platter, while JTS will get about 2.15 . (BTW... if there are any DD engineers out there, I would be interested in knowing how JTS did this and who is suppliying these heads.. I thought MR heads were needed for this density) > Do they license this techn. from IBM? This all sounds very good! IBM has three options I think: 1) They can use their technology lead to increase their market share of drives, which they will certainly be doing to some extent. I think it is interesting to note that their new line of drives implements GMR at all price points, not just for their high end models. If IBM were very aggressive, this would not be terribly good news for the rest of the industry, including JTS, whose 3" drives would no longer hold an advantage over IBM's 2.5" ones. 2) They can sell the heads to other drive manufacturers as they are already doing with their MR heads. This would primarily hurt other head manufacturers (which includes DD manufacturers like Seagate). Since the return on investment for doing this would be greater than for assembling disk drives, this might not be a bad idea for them. 3) They can license their GMR to other head makers, which would be a good idea if they felt the others were not that far behind. This way IBM makes a cut on all disk drives, and still gets to keep its competitive advantage in the DD area. -Scott
