Yes, Oz has painted the way and so will Japan. Japan still has and will have IMO an element of social cohesiveness which Oz apparently does not and I guarantee you the US doesn't.

The alternative is worse.

But if austerity does not do the trick, the US is screwed for the kind of austerity necessary to get us out of the difficulties we are facing, and the cataclysm we will face, creates social and cultural tension the kind of which we have not seen since the Civil War.
