So how many decades should we stop investing in our future to catch up? Two? Three?

You and I have fundamental differences in desired outcomes from public policy. You seem content with red-state outcomes in health, education, infrastructure, etc. Many of us are not.

But you will get your wish as we slam on the brakes for all kinds of needed things in years to come. I'm just glad my personal financial future doesn't depend on American competitiveness and innovation.

Western nations, will have to put up with less now and make do with the rail infrastructure we have.

Ohhhh, I disagree. We just have to change our priorities. Cutting the military budget in half or a significant tax on oil and/or gasoline would put us more in line with other nations of the world in spending on military or cost of oil and free up an absolutely unbelievable amount of money for rail infrastructure. We all can't keep driving Katelew, that is the one sure thing that will destroy us.

Has anyone brought up the COST OF THE WARS to our economy.
It is a subject not broached as to what the two illegal wars have wrought in terms of our country.... forget the deaths.

If we would cut back on military spending and bring troops home and just pay what the cost will be to those veterans without limbs and mental disorders that would be
tremendous. But to keep the number of troops we do all over the world in every country drains us tremendously.

AND last night I heard that troops will not be home from Iraq until 2013. I don't know what president will get our troops out of there but let's not forget the cost to the budget which continually gets ignored as we bicker with Social Security and Medicare.

Any nation that cannot take care of it's people is not
a democracy. Democratic means caring for everyone but that gets taken as socialism... propagated full time by FOX
commentators who by the way make MILLIONS of dollars.

Do they have a vested interested in extending the tax cuts
do you think ?
