Neanderthal DNA is 99.7 % the same as modern Homo Sapiens. This is higher even than chimps which is between 98 and 99%. The conjecture is that humans interbred with Neanderthal shortly after leaving Africa (which suggests that Neanderthals had never lived in Africa). Studies have not found any evidence of Neanderthal DNA in the African line suggesting that Neanderthals never did penetrate into Africa prior to their extinction--or maybe that they just weren't all that sexy in the jungle ambience?
