. . . but it has occurred to me that my generation may be the peak in terms of American longevity and living healthily into old age.

Your generation, to remake Krugman's point, includes a lot of folk who are not living much longer than their comparably socially located predecessors of previous generations. The janitors of the world. As long as we have this shabby healthcare insurance system with a political party coming into power who ignores the growing numbers of uninsured, those numbers could well go down for the janitorial segment of the population.

It seems the air is cleaner than ever to me. Try driving behind a 1960's 8 cylinder vehicle. Get behind it at a stop light and close your eyes. Damn now I remember how it smelled all over when driving around when I was a kid. CO, NOx and unburned hydrocarbons.

Geez we used to have rivers light on fire from pollution in this country. Amazing people still act like the USA is not much cleaner than it was 25, 50, 75 or a 100 years ago.

As far as food pollution? If you consider the crap people are peddled with the governments backing I agree. People are polluting themselves with large volumes or poison Pepsi, etc pushes.
