the only way you'd ever get rid of employer sponsored policies is to replace them with government sponsored ones, which would undoubtedly be the wrong direction to move.

I agree that would be the wrong direction. I favor individual policies rather than group policies. That would optimize choice and competitive pricing. We would have been so much better off had employers not gotten into that business.
