Indeed to this day I contend that the mechanism of the basic evolutionary events, 1) initial generation of a lifeform, and 2) the speciation event whereby a species cleaves from its progenitor, are fundamentally mysterious from the current state of the science. Actually that's something I agree with you on. Natural selection and mutation - the things that are commonly referred to are likely only one of very many things that drive variation, and probably NOT the most important. Where I'd probably differ with you is I think the "hand of God", "divine purpose", however you put it, is one of those things.
