But that is a recent development. (but thanks for correcting me) I was thinking historically. I can't believe that so many diverse societies have defined marriage as between men and women, and it is somehow attributible to religion, especially when there are so many obvious cultural reasons for this distinction.

I don't know anyone, who isn't religious, who hates or fears gays. That particular bete noir seems to have an almost solely religious genesis.
