Johnson, 61, and Leslie Johnson — elected to the Prince George’s County Council earlier this month — were charged Friday with tampering with evidence related to the commission of a federal offense, destruction of records in a federal investigation and aiding and abetting. The dramatic arrests was the culmination in a four-year investigation. “The tip of the iceberg,” said U.S. Attorney for Maryland Rod Rosenstein, who promised that more charges and more defendants were to come. Charging documents described a frantic scene: Leslie Johnson called her husband Friday morning with the news that two federal agents were knocking on the couple’s front door of their Mitchellville mansion. Jack Johnson directed his wife to go upstairs to their bedroom and take the check from a box in the liquor cabinet and take the cash from the basement, charging documents said. When she asked what to do with the check, Johnson said, “Tear it up!” Leslie Johnson, 58, then said, “They’re saying FBI, Jack. Do you want me to put it down the toilet?” Johnson replied, “Yes, flush that.” When she asked about the cash, Johnson said, “Stuff it in your bra and walk out or something. I don’t know.” At the door, the agents found $79,600 stuffed in Leslie Johnson’s underwear, according to the criminal complaint. Earlier Friday morning, FBI agents approached the county executive after he met with an unidentified developer and was recorded accepting $15,000 from the businessman, charging documents said. Johnson told the investigators the money was for a going-away party and that he had no business with the developer. The agents took the money and other items and let Johnson leave. That’s when the Johnsons began a series of phone calls to each other, prosecutors said. And authorities were recording the calls. The Johnsons face 20 years if convicted of all charges. Johnson and his wife were expected to be released under terms that include home detention. Jack Johnson will be required to be electronically monitored. Speaking to reporters Friday evening, Johnson said he was innocent of the charges and would not directly answer questions about serving out his term.washingtonexaminer.com P.G. executive taken into custody By: Scott McCabe Examiner Staff Writer 11/12/10 1:05 PM EST Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson (Greg Whitesell/Examiner) Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife have been taken into custody by federal agents, sources tell The Washington Examiner.
