Those millions of species all diverged from the same point, the putative Original RNA Lifeform. The central kinetics of life processes, including gene copying and translation, were the same for "everybody".

As for a different code using the same chemistry ... on the surface it is plausible. However there seem to be direct affinities between some key amino acids and their transfer RNAs. These became entrenched in the genetic code. Like a game of sudoku, suddenly the set of available solutions became much smaller.
