It wouldn't surprise me that if the major gold mines of the world were situated in the USA then there would still be a gold standard today.

In the "good old days" a currency note would have printed on it something like ... "Pay the bearer on demand 'x-amount' of gold".
Today the equivalent is something like ... "Pay the bearer on demand another piece of printed paper".
