"Wasn't GM able to produce pieces of crap for decades without government involvement?" Sure. You just get more now, and taxpayers on the hook to support over paid unions workers, when by rights, GM should have gone bankrupt. That would have allowed them to restructure and get profitable again without government dictating socially responsible cars when the market does not support it. There are only so many people willing to buy the Prius and it's kin, at least until the economics of such are better.
