My feeling is that DVD-RAM will do more damage to Iomega and low end tape rather than DLT. DLT is a mid end tape backup solution that will have significant advantage over DVD RAM with respect to not only transfer rate but also capacity. A DVD-RAM jukebox would need about 15 x more discs (than DLT tapes) when compared to the current DLT 7000. This increased capacity also increases performance as it reduced the number of media changes that would be required in a library device.

DLT tape is an excellent medium for applications that require frequent backup writes but only occational retrievals (restores). Any application that needs data online would be better served by a random access medium in place of DLT. Applications such as this do not use DLT today and would not in the future so they would not affect the expected growth of DLT.
