Paul:> there ought to be (COMDEX) stations< You missed my post...

In post 18446, I indicated that you can register to win a Porsche.
Guess how one participates:

"The COMDEX IntraNet - Novell Connecting Points" will allow all registered attendees to send and retrieve E-mail, schedule appointments and access the Internet from four central locations on the show floor or from their hotel rooms via a browser during the November 17-21 show. The massive network will manage an estimated one million messages per day, for a total of five million messages by the end of the event. ..."

Some people said it was impossible.
Others tried and failed.
No one has ever done it before.
But we put it together in less than a week.

It's the world's largest production network--an
enterprise-wide messaging solution being showcased for
the 250,000 attendees at Fall COMDEXT in Las Vegas.
Called Novell Connecting Points, this unique system is
powered by Compaq Proliant servers and Novell
GroupWiseT 5.2 and Novell BorderManagerT software.

Yes,but ... don't you think that somehow MSFT will get at least some of the credit for the results if the users use Windows applications to send email?

Seems that's what's happened most of the time ... Novell's stuff works well, but is 'unseen' ... I think Eric Schmidt calls it 'plumbing' ... even when you're using Novell's Network, you're looking at a Windows screen ... combine that perspective with the 'stealth marketing' that we've seen for the past year ... and who will really know that there are Novell products that make it all work?

And ... that Novell actually has some products that can be purchased so customers can provide the same kind of service on their own PCs ... or will they just expect Windows to work the way they see at COMDEX ... without knowing anything about the 'plumbing'?

Somebody very wise once told me ... 'the user interface is the system' ... that was before PC's existed when our biggest worry was performance of transaction based systems, it's even more true now.

I don't think that 'stealth marketing' will work anymore, not even at COMDEX ... does anyone know what Novell has planned, besides the car giveaway? ... something like maybe a 45 day trial of BorderManager, a 2-user system (5 would be better) for $49 or less (maybe even free would be a good idea), a 3 user trial version of Groupwise ... for every attendee.

We've got to get more people actually recognizing Novell's products ... and wanting to buy them. They probably won't look past the user interface at the 'plumbing' without a good reason ... it's going to take some genuine effective marketing to make that happen.

I know they are capable of getting it done, but they still haven't shown the commitment to convince me that they will.
