Chuck,

Permalloy is the material that's used for the MR stripe in an MR head. Permalloy is one of the most common materials used for making ordinary magnets. The physics involves a small change in resistance when permalloy encounters a magnetic field that changes the orientation of the magnetic domains within the material. The MR stripe is only used for reading and for writing there is an inductive element just like what's used in the older TFI heads.
